| Lake Biwa |

Lake Biwa is located at the center of Japan's main island. It has about
600 species of animals and 500 species of plants including 50 endemic species.
It supplies drinking water to some 14 million residents downstream.
The Ramsar Convention registered Lake Biwa as an important wetland site
in 1993. |

| Akanoi Bay |
Akanoi Bay is located on the southeast shore of Lake Biwa. Its surface
area is 1.4 km2 and average depth is 2 meters.
Eight streams and canals flow into Akanoi Bay.
The human population in this watershed was 53 thousand as of 2001 and still
increasing. |
