Akanoi Bay is located at southeast coastline of the South Basin of Lake Biwa. The watershed is occupied with residential and industrial areas and with rice paddy field. Water in Akanoi Bay is slowly replaced and deemed to be one of the most eutrophic in Lake Biwa due to it's semi-closed and shallow structure. The degradation of water quality is due to the high growth of population, increased amount of agricultural fertilization and industrial pollution at the watershed for past a couple of decades. The water quality monitoring was started 7 years ago at about 100 spots along 8 small rivers flowing through Moriyama into Akanoi Bay. The levees of small rivers have been made with concrete panels and designed straight water flow so as the drainage capacity increased. The results have been reported here as the " Water Environment Monitoring Map ". |
