Changing shoreline of Akanoi Bay

@

The lake bottom relics at Akanoi Bay which trace back to 6,000 years ago indicate the portion now under water was once a land where people lived in the Jomon Era(10,000B.C. - 400B.C.).

Lake Biwa collects and stores water from the rainfall in the prefecture and discharges it only through the Seta River.  This caused submergence of fields due to torrential rainfalls to continue.

The completion of dredging work of the Seta River in 1911 thanks to the petition made by the residents along the shore finally terminated large-scale damages.  The shoreline at Akanoi Bay has not altered very much since the installation of Nango Dam at the Seta River.
