The State of the World's Lakes and a Look Toward the Future

ABSTRACT

Lakes hold 90% of the world's available surface freshwater. World lakes are in crisis. Diversion of lake water for use in irrigation, invasion of plant and animal exotic species and contamination by toxic and nutrients from industry, farms, sewage, and urban runoff are common on a scale today that significantly threatens lake ecosystems on every continent but Antarctica. In many countries both the quality and quantity of freshwater in lakes has declined significantly in the past 50 years. Many lake watersheds cross political boundaries, creating a fragmented system of lake management that is often a significant obstacle to progress on lakes. Lakes also, despite their importance, continue to be fairly invisible on the global conservation screen.

There are many positive developments in the area of lake conservation, including the recent signing of a global treaty on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), and the developments of new drip irrigation systems that can reduce water diversions from lakes. Most importantly, lake advocates around the world are working toward comprehensive, participatory,watershed-wide management plans for their lake watersheds. Proven and promising strategies for dealing with the many threats facing lakes exist and are being refined and shared between watersheds.
